Business credit, explained without the jargon

If the phrase "business credit" makes your eyes glaze over, you're not alone. It's an area that's been made to sound far more complicated than it is, often by people selling something. So here's the plain-language version, and the first three steps to actually begin.
Why it matters
When your business has its own credit profile, separate from your personal name, a few good things happen. Your personal credit is more protected. Your business can access funding on its own strength. And you look more legitimate to lenders, suppliers, and partners. Most small business owners fund everything with personal cards and never build this, which caps how far the business can grow.
Step 1: Make the business a real, separate entity
Before a business can have its own credit, it has to legally exist as its own thing. That means forming a proper business structure (an LLC or corporation), getting an EIN (the business version of a Social Security number, free from the IRS), and opening a dedicated business bank account. From here on, business money and personal money never mix. That separation is the foundation everything else sits on.
Step 2: Get the business "findable"
Lenders and credit bureaus need to be able to look your business up. That means a consistent business name, address, and phone number everywhere; a business phone line; and, when relevant, a D-U-N-S number (a free business identifier from Dun & Bradstreet, the main business credit bureau). Small, unglamorous, and genuinely important. Inconsistencies here are a common reason businesses stay invisible to credit.
Step 3: Build a payment history on purpose
Credit is a track record, and track records are built one on-time payment at a time. Start with accounts that report to the business bureaus (certain vendor accounts and business credit cards), use them for things you'd buy anyway, and pay them early. Over time, that history becomes a profile lenders trust. There's no shortcut, but there is a clear, repeatable path.
The honest caveat
Anyone promising instant business credit or guaranteed large funding overnight is selling a fantasy. Real business credit is built deliberately, and it's absolutely worth it. This is one of the things we help clients set up correctly through our Capital & Credit program: the structure, the steps, and the funding options that fit where your business actually is.
